Currency:
- The official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but the US dollar (USD) is widely accepted. Carry small denominations of both currencies for convenience.
Language:
- Khmer is the official language, but many people, especially in tourist areas, speak English. Learning a few basic Khmer phrases can enhance your interactions.
Cultural Sensitivity:
- Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples (cover your shoulders and knees). Remove shoes and hats when entering sacred sites.
Health Precautions:
- Stay hydrated and drink bottled or boiled water. Be cautious with street food; choose busy vendors for better hygiene.
- Consider vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid. It's advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses.
Transportation:
- Tuk-tuks are a popular and affordable way to get around cities. Always negotiate the fare before your ride.
- For longer distances, private car hires or buses are available regardless of the city.
Local Etiquette:
- A slight bow with your palms pressed together (a sampeah) is a common greeting.
- Be polite and courteous; Cambodians value respect and kindness.
Watch for Scams:
- Be cautious of overcharging or scams in tourist areas. Always agree on prices for services beforehand.
Stay Connected:

Explore Beyond the Main Tourist Attractions:
- While Angkor Wat is a must-see, consider visiting smaller temples and rural areas to get a fuller picture of Cambodian life.
Respect Nature and Wildlife:
- Avoid activities that exploit animals, such as elephant rides. Instead, engage in responsible wildlife viewing experiences.
Bargaining:
- Bargaining is common in markets and local shops, but do so politely and with a smile.
Plan Your Cash Needs:
- Some establishments may not accept credit cards, so carry enough cash for daily expenses.
