HIGH ALTITUDE SICKNESS (AMS)
What is High Altitude Sickness?
High altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), can occur when you ascend to high altitudes (typically above 2,500m/8,200ft) too quickly. It results from the reduced availability of oxygen at higher elevations and can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level.
Symptoms: Common symptoms of high altitude sickness include:
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue or weakness
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Shortness of breath
- Sleep disturbances
- Swelling of hands, feet, or face
evention: To minimize the risk of developing altitude sickness, consider the following precautions:
- Ascend Gradually: Avoid ascending to higher altitudes too quickly. It is generally recommended to gain no more than 300-500 meters in altitude per day. Take rest days if needed to acclimatize.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. This helps your body acclimatize and reduces the risk of dehydration, which can exacerbate symptoms.
- Balanced Nutrition: Maintain a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates to provide energy as your body adjusts.
- Acclimatization Days: Include acclimatization days in your itinerary, especially before reaching higher elevations. This is essential for proper physiological adjustment.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel. If symptoms of AMS develop, it is crucial to communicate with your trekking guide and consider descending to a lower altitude.
Treatment: If symptoms of altitude sickness occur, descend to a lower altitude immediately. Rest, hydrate, and avoid physical exertion until symptoms improve. In more severe cases, medication such as acetazolamide (Diamox) may be prescribed by a healthcare professional to help prevent or alleviate symptoms.
Conclusion: While high altitude sickness can be concerning, taking the necessary precautions and understanding its symptoms can help ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. Always consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your health or the risks of trekking at high altitudes.
